Henry Metz and Iris Msing left their home in northern Germany 20 years ago sailing across the Atlantic to the Caribbean in their small sloop, a 29 footer.
They were tremendously successful on their first charter yacht, the Morgan 50 sloop Relax, but Henry had his eye on Shaitan for a while. She was already a well-regarded charter yacht, having worked in French Polynesia and even completed a circumnavigation.
They then purchased Shaitan of Tortola in 1995 and lovingly restored her to the well found, gleaming yacht she is today.
Captain Henry, who is in his early 50's, started sailing as a young boy. With nearly twenty years of charter yacht experience and having served as a navigator in the navy, he is licensed for yachts of any size and has been trained in first aid, sea survival and fire fighting. Henry is a sailing instructor who knows all the great snorkeling spots from the Virgins to Grenada. In the 1992 Antigua Race Week, his team won the Nations Cup (Team Germany) and his yacht took the Boatphone Cup for second in their class.
Beside water sports, Henry likes to experience the wonders and mysteries provided by Mother Nature and the spectacle and variety of foreign cultures. Being an engineer by trade, he loves to build and create - all evident in most of the custom refitting and refinements that Henry completed aboard Shaitan of Tortola.
Iris is in her mid-forties, was also aboard the 29 footer with Henry on the trans- Atlantic crossing. She too is a licensed captain, a former dive instructor and a five-time winner of the Grand Marnier Cooking Competition at the annual autumn charter yacht show. Having grown up around her parent's nursery, Iris loves the fascinating flora and fauna of the tropical world, and of course the bounty and diversity of the undersea world.
With Iris, you have the perfect snorkel guide with you in the water and being a retired dive instructor means that Iris is also a trained "Rescue Diver". (When you charter with Henry or Iris, you and your family can feel perfectly safe in and out of the water.)
Henry and Iris with all their experience, and Iris, who is an award-winning chef, are the makings of one of the most experienced and trained charter crews in the Caribbean. Iris continues to excel with her culinary skills as she was appointed winner at the latest 2009 Antigua Boat Show Chef de Concourse Competition. Beyond the mere exhilaration of sailing a performance cruising machine like Shaitan of Tortola, Henry and Iris know about charter guests needs. They know the interesting and even curious destinations, anchorages and where to find the "good times" that discerning charter guests desire, creating an admixture that can only be called an "excellent vacation!"
There will always be a third crew member aboard Shaitan of Tortola to assist with the sailing, keeping everything shipshape on deck while keeping the guest cabins in order.
