Captain Laurance Ottley started sailing in his early teens, some would say a bit late for a Brit, progressing from dinghies to off shore cruising and racing in both modern and traditional vessels. After a career int he decorating trade he took up sailing professionally in 1996. For the next 6 years he was employed first as mate, then as captain, aboard the 30 meter traditional wooden sailing ship IRENE in the Caribbean charter trade.
From 2004 to 2006 Laurance was full-time captain aboard another period wooden sailing ship, Thames Sailing Barge Kitty, doing corporate charters with up to 46 passengers before moving into the superyacht sector. In 2008 he took command of the Hoek-designed 30 meter ketch APHRODITE cruising extensively in the Med and Caribbean with the owner and guests over a period of three years. 2012 presented the opportunity for Captain Ottley to return to IRENE on a voyage around the Atlantic with sail trainees and cargo as part of a sustainable transport initiative.
On land Laurance loves to be 'let loose in the galley'practicing skills he has learned from working with great charter chefs over the years. Cycling is another passion. He rides road, cyclo cross and mountain bikes and tours on two wheels. He once completed a 1,500km six week ride through Europe including the Swiss Alps and Pyrenees mountain ranges.
Having been on board SY REE since May 2013, Captain Ottley takes pride in his excellent crew management skills and maintaining the vessel she commands to the highest possible standards to ensure owners and guests experience the fullest enjoyment wherever they cruise.
Born into a family restaurant business in her adopted city of Modena, (she's Sicilian by birth) Gabriella has been serving bar and table, and learning first hand the secrets of the Italian kitchen from as early as she can remember. But her home town could not contain her irrepressible enthusiasm for living the fullest life possible and so, armed with her cooking and service skills and the work ethic of a family run business, she set sail to travel and work for extended periods in places as far away from home as Brazil and Australia. Adding another string to her bow in 2005, she qualified as a Kite Surf Instructor and thus began a teaching career in that sport. She is now inseparable from her board and kite and is to be found carving the waves whenever she has play time from her duties on Ree.
Born in South Africa but raised in Paris, Kirsten had originally embarked on the academic life, reading English Literature at University, and then TEFL teaching in the Far East. But after taking some cooking courses for fun while teaching Thailand, she decided on a radical change and embarked on a years intense Le Cordon Bleu course, gaining 1st prize at the midyear exam and the valued student award for her year. On graduation she spent some years honing her craft at Michelin starred restaurants in France, before transferring to yachting in 2014. Now able to travel and cook, her range has broadened so that now she describes her style as firmly fusion.
Lars hails from Texas but his family roots are Swedish. A lifelong sailor, he paid his way teaching sailing for seven years before gaining his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. On graduating Lars tried to settle down working for a test engineering company for a number of years until the call of sea lead him to acquiring his own yacht and embarking on a year long voyage with a revolving cast of volunteer crew he organized to help offset the bills. After this, career at sea was a logical and desirable step and yacht engineering the obvious way in. Lars is our technology geek and currently his new toy is a drone he will be using to capture our adventures along the way.
Australian Catherine heads up the interior department on Ree with all the verve and ingenuity necessary to keep the fittings, furnishing, linens and service items in first class condition and organization during Ree’s endless cycle of twice yearly ocean voyages and seasonal chartering. As our front of house you will find her smiling intelligent demeanor and Antipodean straightforwardness a constant pleasure. Kat learned her service and bar skills while working through university where she gained a mechanical Engineering degree that lead to a three year stint in the oil and gas industry. Keen to know what lay over the northern horizon she put her career aside to join the yachting industry where her resourcefulness will likely take her far.
Growing up in a remote farmhouse in the shadow of Scotland’s Cairngorm mountains and gaining her Duke of Edinburgh’s gold award at age 16, its fair to say Mhairi is a bit of an outdoor girl. The theme continues when, after graduating with a first class degree in Business at 20, she headed off to Africa for a gap year. Travelling solo, she traversed remote areas of East Africa, Botswana and then on to Ethiopia and where she did volunteer work at an orphanage for three months. The restless independent outdoor girl then changed tack, moved to London and took on a series of jobs in high end service and events organisation including a year as a PA for a celebrity fashion consultant. Her taciturn manner thus belies an intelligent, worldly young woman, well able to fulfil her deck duties whilst providing the highest standard of service to our charter guests.
