Crew Profile

CREW THRU MAY 31, 2018:
Bill West: He was born in Montana and grew up finding fishing holes, hunting and learning the mechanical trade..flipping cars and trucks..not houses. He holds his 100 ton near coastal captain's license with towing and sailing endorsements. When his two boys were 3 and 5 years of age, the family packed up and moved from Montana to the Caribbean!! Bill supported his family by doing boat deliveries and "wrenching" on yachts. Eventually, the family settled in the San Juan Islands. Working for Vessel Assist (Currently renamed BoatUS) for the San Juan Islands, in one year alone, Bill achieved over 9000 nautical miles. The storytelling of all the tales during his time running Vessel Assist is guaranteed to amaze anyone. The boat wrecks, the rescues, the good, the bad and the ugly all come to light when tall tales of boating and salvage adventures begin!! Oh..and don't forget the fish stories....but this case ..they are all true!! ( Remember..he grew up finding fishing holes) If you want to catch fish...Bill is your captain!!!

Chrystal Rozander-West: Chrystal was born in Calgary, Alberta Canada but has spent the last 25 years in Victoria, British Columbia Canada. For the last 19 years, she has owned and operated a residential lighting showroom in Victoria, BC called Pine Lighting. (what a great occupation for someone named Chrystal :-) Recently, Chrystal brought on a partner in the business which gave her a new lease on life to find a second career that included both her love for being on the water and her love of cooking, entertaining and fine cuisine.

Before meeting and marrying Bill, Chrystal had always owned various power boats to go island hopping throughout the San Juan's and Gulf Islands. Her boating life began at age 22 and she never missed a chance to get out on the water exploring the entire Puget Sound and most of the Gulf Islands skippering her own boats. Chrystal has a few unusual talents: hustling on the pool table, playing poker and playing the bagpipes (not all at the same time!). Her best poker accomplishment was winning the Canadian Women's Poker Classic in a Texas Hold'em bounty tournament in 2013. She also played in the 9 Ball Nationals at age 19. Chrystal has traveled to South Africa, Thailand, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico and many of the US states.

Bill and Chrystal met on San Juan Island, WA where their shared love of the water was a powerful connection that blossomed into a romance. In October 2014, Bill and Chrystal married at sea and moved aboard a 57' ketch sailboat. After a summer in Alaska (2015) doing boat deliveries together between Seattle, WA and Kodiak, Alaska, the two decided to explore warmer climates and combine their talents in the charter yacht industry. With a shared desire to see the world and an intense love of good food, cocktails and great company, Bill and Chrystal are excited to welcome guests aboard MAKAI to explore the Virgin Islands together.
