Crew Profile

Captain Steve Van Wig grew up sailing and racing small sailboats and surfing the southern California waters. He delivered race boats as crew on deliveries and has crewed and raced off California, Mexico and Hawaii. Discovering windsurfing at 17 was followed by 25 years of passionately chasing windsurfing all over California, Baja Mexico, Maui and Oregon. Steve has owned boats most of his life, including beach cats, ski boats and pocket cruisers. Since 2007 he has been sailing, cruising and living aboard a Whitby 42ft ketch that Janet and he rebuilt from the keel up. He has been chartering for the last few years in the BVis in winter and the Grenadines for summer. Sailing seasonally between these two destinations allows them to enjoy and explore the Caribbean island chain twice a year as they move the boat back & forth.

After spending 15 years in the restaurant industry, Steve opened and ran 2 successful businesses while living in the Colombia River Gorge, Oregon for 19 years, one a furniture outlet and the other a fiberglass shop involved with the windsurfing industry. Steve enjoys meeting new people and showing them the joys of seeing things from the water side of life. He loves to cook and is always in the galley whipping up delicious snacks and healthy and hearty meals that his past charter guests rave about. No one goes hungry with Steve in the galley. Steve and Janet's love of sailing and years of experience sailing equates to safe and fun boat handling. You might find either one at the helm while the other is inside whipping up something yummy to eat or drink.

Steve currently holds a USCG100 Ton USCG Masters license. In addition to a STCW marine safety, fire and first aid rating. He also holds a USCG Sailing and towing endorsements. Steve is a kite surfing instructor and pretty much a fanatic about chasing lobsters.

Janet was born in Holland and grew up in a family passionate about sailing, camping in Portugal and food. Since her father was a merchant marine seaman, as well as a competitive racer with his own cruiser / racer, it was only a matter of time before she was following in his foot path. She went from dingy sailing as a kid to Hobie-Cat racing in the North Sea to more recently delivering new cruising yachts in Europe and across the Atlantic. As an active member of the sailing club in Holland on the North Sea at Noordwyk, she was also very involved in organizing national regattas and social activities while remaining active as racing crew. She competed in the Hobie cat European nationals and went to Greece to compete in the worlds.

Her love for sailing and kitesurfing led her travel to a good chunk of Europe, South America and the States where she met Steve while on a kitesurfing vacation to the world-famous windsurfing and kitesurfing destination called the Gorge in Oregon. The adventures continued, traveling to brazil for 4 months of camping on the northern beaches... they bought a dune buggy and drove on the beach to a new spot to kite every day. After that adventure they fixed up a cruising boat in Florida in 2007 and started living aboard. Starting in 2013 they set out to explore the Caribbean Sea to enjoy the culture there while living on their boat, cruising, exploring and working term charters in the Caribbean Islands (Virgin Islands in the winter and the Grenadines in the summer.

Janet's love for cooking and creating good healthy food started at her parent's knees, as they are both great cooks and loved to entertain and cook for family and friends. Her use of spices and fun flavors and creative sauces comes from her traveling and experiencing the different unique cousine each country had to offer. She enjoys making healthy, yet decadent deserts. Ok, and for the captain a few that are not as healthy. But, still decadent. The devil's chocolate rum cake, and dark chocolate coconut haystacks are favorites. Yes, we both love dark Chocolate.

Janet is but a 4-day practical test away from her dream of getting her RYA offshore captains license, so do not be surprised if she is driving the boat while your Captain is inside baking or whipping up some treat for you, learned from his long years in the restaurant industry.

Janet's passions/hobbies are Swimming, Kitesurfing, Snorkeling, Stand up paddling (on the stand up she has a funny trend of taking off and coming back 4 or 5 hours later having decided in route to paddle around the nearest small island) and Cooking, not necessarily in that order ;>)

Janet's goal is to give everybody an unforgettable vacation. She is sweet and kind and just wants to make sure to show you the most beautiful places in the Virgin Islands. Is it the out of the way quiet anchorage with swimming pool bottoms or the amazing snorkeling? Scuba diving? Or the bar hopping on the whitest, busiest beaches? Chef Janet and Captain Steve plan to make it happen for you. Come join us in Paradise. We will always show you our favorite spots here.
