David Wayne Laird - Captain

Captain Dave was born in Clear Lake, Texas, close to Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. After graduating from college and working in accounting for eight years, the ocean was calling to him so he cashed in his retirement plan and moved to Florida. His love of yachting started in 1998 and over the past two decades, he has worked on charter yachts on the east and west coasts of Canada and the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Central America. You may remember Captain David from the 130' Westport Milk Money, the high profile 112’ Westport charter yacht ANDIAMO, the Azimut charter yacht PRINCESS MARCIE, and the 108’ Westship charter yachts Amazing Grace and Martha Ann. From these yachts, David gained extensive cruising experience in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and North and Central America. David’s charter reputation is simple: listen to the guest, offer suggestions, and give the guest what they want. In addition to being a successful charter yacht captain, David is also a certified NAUI Dive Instructor.

Chief Officer Tom Vannieuwenhuyse was born in Leuven, Belgium, a student town, and enjoyed sailing, sports and martial arts as a child. Following his university studies, he worked as an import/export coordinator in Brussels for two years before deciding to pursue a career that embraced his love of the sea. Tom has now worked in yachting for eight years, and four of those have been as XO. When not at work on BIG SKY, you’ll find him diving, running, swimming, or enjoying other water sports.

Jason Williams, Deck Engineer

Jason Williams, also known as J. Will, grew up in Orlando, Florida and on a 1000 acre organic farm on Hawaii’s “Big Island.” As a child, he enjoyed karate, surfing, boating and fishing. In 2015, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale after fishing the Hawaiian waters. He’s now been working on yachts ranging from 80’ to 125’ for the past three years, really tapping into his sense of adventure. In addition to boating, he is passionate about cooking, gardening, camping, and hiking. He’s also quite comfortable on the stage as a fire performer.

Carla Annas | Chief Stewardess

Education/Certifications: LLB law degree; Yacht Service Level 2; Power Boat L2

Chief Stewardess Carla Annas hails from Cape Town, South Africa, and grew up in the wine region of Stellenbosch where she spent her days reading and climbing trees. She started yachting in 2013, and has spent the past five years on private and charter yachts ranging from 25-85m. She has even crossed from Dubai to Thailand. Carla loves hiking, with Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park topping her list of incredible mountain ranges to explore. She also thinks Montenegro’s unspoiled beauty is worth exploring.
When not hiking, this loyal, dedicated and warm-hearted crew member spends her leisure time swimming, wakeboarding, trail running, and reading.

Marinda Potgieber - Second Stew

Second Stew Marinda Potgieber was born in South Africa and grew up in the town of Pietermaritzburg. In 2013, a longing to travel started her on her yachting career, and she is now Second Stew. She believes in making the most of every moment, and is dedicated to ensuring that charter guests on BIG SKY has a memorable experience. Her favourite destinations are New Zealand for the adventure and lifestyle, and Portugal for the wine and culture. While ashore, you’ll find Marinda camping, mountain biking, hiking, or long distance running. She also has a strong interest in the stock market and politics.

Madeleine Ringvall | Third Stew

Education/Certifications: STEW, PDSD, Food Hygiene 2, ENG 1; background in Media Studies including graphic design, video, film, radio, and journalism.

Third Stew Madeleine Ringvall hails from Alingsås, Sweden but spent her summers at her family’s seaside house in Hunnebostrand on the west coast. This is where she first spent time on a boat, fishing with her father and grandfather for mackerel, a pastime she enjoys to this day. She was also an avid horseback rider, and still rides when she’s not at sea. Her other passions include diving and tennis. Madeleine is new to the world of yachting, but she is eager to learn more about this industry, explore the world, and meet new people. In her travels thus far,she’s fallen in love with Indonesia -- especially the food, the impressive landscapes, and the amazing culture and people.

Michael Philippe Mordor - Chef

Education/Certifications: Holds 2 Culinary Degrees; Board Certified Instructor -- HACCP Food Safety and WHMIS; STCW (95) Basic Safety Training course

Chef Mike was born in Montreal, Quebec and has worked in the yachting industry since 2007. He grew up in the city, but spent his weekends at the family cottage in the mountains. As a child, playing hockey was a big part of his life, and he still enjoys sports to this day. Over the past decade, his work has taken him to many exciting destinations, including the East and West Coasts of Canada and the US, the Mediterranean, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. He also been part of three Atlantic crossings. Of all the places he’s seen, Canada’s Cape Breton Island is the destination he loves the most, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant marine life. Mike is known for his friendly disposition, wealth of knowledge, and sense of adventure.

Andrew Deacon | Bosun

Education/Certifications: Diploma in International Marketing Management; Master of Yachts 200 GT; OOW modules - Advanced Sea Survival, GMDSS, GSK, Helm; PADI advanced open water

Bosun Andrew Deacon was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, enjoying its beaches, mountains and farms. As a child, he spent his time hiking, surfing, fishing, and playing rugby. Following a ski season in Aspen, he moved to Palma, Mallorca in 2010 to begin his yachting career. He has been working on yachts for over five years, and has experience in all aspects of working on deck for charter and private yachts. He is working toward his OOW and hopes to achieve it by 2018. On BIG SKY, you’ll often find him
spending time with guests as they go diving or try out the available water sports. When not working, Deacs enjoys surfing, fishing, hiking, rugby, soccer, and cricket. His favorite place to visit is the Pacific Coast of Mexico, with its good food, good waves, and great beaches.

Mike Aston-Smith | Deckhand

Our Deckhand Mike Aston-Smith spent his childhood in the English countryside, where he enjoyed swimming, rugby, running and kayaking. He started yachting two years ago and plans to advance through the deck ranks while meeting new people and traveling around the world. Mike is outgoing, friendly and hard-working, and brings extensive watersports experience to charter guests, including flyboarding. He loves the limitless beauty of the ocean, and spends his free time scuba diving and enjoying other watersports. He also enjoys snowboarding.
