Steps to Planning

You’ve decided to embark on a yacht charter! Now there are some decisions to make and steps you need to complete before booking your trip. Here’s the game plan:

  1. Start about six months in advance to plan your trip. This will allow you to research all of your options and get the best price on your charter.
  2. Decide who is going on the trip. If it’s just you and a significant other, you are probably seeking a very different experience than if you have a large family group. Children must be thought of if you plan to take any along, and proper accommodations reserved.
  3. Choose your location. Do you want to visit the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or elsewhere? Do you want to see specific sights, or are you open to any itinerary?
  4. Select your sailing dates. The weather and chosen location may influence when you decide  to take your trip, so you can ensure nice weather and (if sailing) favorable winds.
  5. Figure out what you ultimately want from the experience. Are you hoping for rest and relaxation? Adrenaline fueled excitement? Partying and shopping?
  6. Pick a type of yacht. Do you long to experience sailing, or is a luxury power yacht preferable? Do you want a full crew or just a skipper and possibly a chef?

Depending on where you decide to go and when, you’ll need to pack appropriate and you may need items such as a passport. Check out our FAQ and our What to Bring pages for more information!

What to Bring

When getting ready for your yacht charter vacation, it’s easy to overlook items that are “must-have”… and equally as easy to pack far too much. Here’s a rough idea of the things you should pack, along with some items that are optional.

  1. If you will be outside of your home country, travel documents are a must. This includes your passports and/or visas, tickets, and cash, credit cards and/or travelers checks.
  2. Soft sided bag are the preferred type of yacht luggage as they fit neatly in storage spaces and can be folded and tucked away when not in used. Space is at a premium!
  3. Shoes. You may envision yourself as barefoot and fancy free, but in reality you’ll want 2-3 pairs. On board shoes (flip flops or soft soled shoes), water shoes (if you plan on diving, snorkeling or wading), and street shoes for excursions onshore.
  4. Bathing suits and cover ups. You will likely want to live in lightweight clothing, so make sure you have spares. Add some shorts or capris in case evenings in the wind get cool.
  5. Street clothes and club attire, if needed. If you plan to spend time ashore dining, shopping or clubbing, you’ll want appropriate togs. If you plan on visiting a church or monastery, consider taking at least one conservative outfit (covered arms and legs may be required).
  6. At least one lightweight sweater, fleece or jacket. Some nights can get a little cool depending on the season!
  7. Protective gear. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses may not be provided, so ensure that you have protection from the sun – which depending on the destination could shine brightly your entire trip!
  8. Washcloths. It’s a little known fact that most peoples in Greece and the Mediterranean use sponges that are harvested on the islands and can be difficult to find without exorbitant tourist prices attached. Bring your own washrag and avoid exasperation!
  9. Earplugs. Some charters can mean sleeping in close quarters, and if a bunkmate snores you’ll be glad you have these!
  10. Electronics. These are optional – if you absolutely can’t unplug, ask if your yacht charter has a way for you to recharge. Consider bringing an iPod or other music player.
  11. Medications. Any prescriptions should have full documentation. Bring al that you need as some countries will not allow their pharmacies to honor foreign prescriptions. Also bring seasickness remedies if needed.

One extra tip: Roll clothing instead of folding – it reduces wrinkles and fold lines and allows you to pack more tightly. A good rule of thumb: Lay out everything you want to bring then cut the pile in half. That should be just about right!

Meals and Menus

For many, a luxury charter is a chance to enjoy delicious professionally prepared gourmet meals in a delightful setting just as much as it is about the experience of yachting or the activities partaken in. Many excellent chefs successfully run their own catering business or work in premier hotels or restaurants before deciding to enjoy a life on the water, creating exquisite meals for small groups on board a luxury vessel.

Part of what ADDISON offers is the chance to have the perfect getaway – including the food. We take your likes and dislikes into account, ask about any food allergies or special dietary concerns, and do our best to ensure you end up on a yacht with a chef who will meet your every culinary desire.

Here are just a few of the foods we’ve seen served through the years on board luxury yacht charters:

Ÿ  Crabmeat baked in green bamboo

Ÿ  Duck sausage with pine nuts and ginger sauce

Ÿ  Avocado egg rolls with cashews

Ÿ  Steamed crepes with chicken and shrimp

Ÿ  Fire grilled fresh caught fish

Ÿ  Lobster ravioli

Ÿ  Mango and coconut salsa

Ÿ  Steamed sea bass with shitake mushrooms

Ÿ  Char-grilled chicken with planked asparagus

Ÿ  Beef tenderloin with watercress and sweet onions

Ÿ  Spicy prawns with garlic sauce

Even ordinary fare such as salads and sandwiches are prepared with gourmet ingredients and served in style. A variety of beverage (alcoholic and non) are also available for your enjoyment.

FAQ

As an independent yacht chartering broker, ADDISON can tailor your vacation down to the smallest detail. Here are some of the most common queries about crewed yacht charters we see from our clients. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, make sure to contact us!

What kind of yacht charter trips do you offer?

We specialize in finding the right yacht, the appropriate crew, the perfect destination and the best activities possible for you and your companions. With ADDISON, you don’t have to simply choose from a few set packages – we can build your yacht charter vacation to your specification!

How much does a yacht charter cost?

The cost of a crewed yacht charter will depend on several factors. The larger the yacht and the more crew is required, the higher the cost – although if you travel with a large party, the cost per person may be lower. Motor or power yachts are often slightly more expensive than sailing yachts by length. The amenities included will also affect the cost, as will the number of days out. Once your proposed charter is tailored, we will disclose to you exactly what is included and what would be considered as “added expenses”.

What do I need to bring?

The smaller your luggage, the better, but then again you don’t want to be caught without something important. Check our comprehensive What to Bring page for a list of recommended items to pack.

What type of activities are available?

This again depends on the specific yacht charter, but common activities include scuba diving, kayaking, tubing, jet skiing, water skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, dining, night clubbing, shopping, fishing, etc. Check out our Activities page for more information

What type of amenities will be included?

In general, the amenities included in each yacht vacation will be listed. Some yachts can change or upgrade amenities from season to season.  Amenities can include on board luxuries such as gyms and hot tubs, water toys such as kayaks, jet skis, and ski boats, and even electronic gadgetry like computers and satellite internet for business use in case you can’t completely unplug.

What will my itinerary include?

With ADDISON, we work with you to create an itinerary that is based on your interests and requests different destinations offer specific attractions, and weather or time of year may also affect what is available.  We can let you know what type of attractions particular locations features, and you can view past yacht charters on our Sample Itineraries page.

What kinds of meals and beverages will be served onboard?

Many charters include the services of an onboard professional chef, and your menus can be created around your personal likes and dislikes as well as dietary needs. Check out our Meals and Menus page for some samples of meals that can be served.
